A Family Celebration in Paradise
June 2024 marked a special occasion for our family—our adult daughter’s birthday. To celebrate, my wife and I, along with our three adult children, stayed at Secrets Aura Cozumel Beach Resort, a beautiful and relaxed adults-only, all-inclusive resort nestled on the pristine shores of Cozumel, Mexico. This was our first visit to this resort, and it did not disappoint. From the breathtaking ocean views to the friendly service, our family vacay was extra memorable.

The Rooms: Luxurious Comfort with Stunning Views
We stayed in a Preferred Club Oceanfront Suite on the second floor, which offered incredible panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. The room was spacious, newly renovated, elegantly decorated, and had a private balcony perfect for sipping morning coffee or enjoying a sunset cocktail. The birthday gal stayed in a Preferred Club BEACHFRONT Suite on the ground floor, just steps away from the beach and the Preferred Club loungers. Her room P-E-R-F-E-C-T and luxurious, with direct access to the sand and ocean just steps from her terarce. It was like having Ocean Front property in Cozumel (with convenient access to your private restroom during the day!) Our other two kids stayed in a Preferred Club Pool View Suite, which overlooked the resort’s lush gardens and sparkling pools.
All rooms were impeccably clean, with comfortable beds, modern amenities, and daily turndown service. The mini-bar was restocked daily, and the air conditioning worked flawlessly—a must in the Cozumel heat!

The resort offers a variety of restaurants that cater to every palate, from authentic Mexican cuisine to international flavors. Here’s a more detailed look at the dining experiences we enjoyed during our stay:
1. Oceana
While Oceana is open to all guests for dinner, Preferred Club guests have exclusive access for breakfast and lunch. This open-air restaurant overlooks the pool and offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea.
– Dinner:
Oceana’s dinner menu focuses on fresh seafood and steak. We loved the grilled octopus, which was tender and flavorful, and the surf & turf, which paired perfectly with a glass of wine. The romantic ambiance, especially at sunset, made this a great spot for a special evening.
– Drinks:
Don’t miss their signature margaritas, which are expertly crafted with tequila, fresh lime juice and rimmed with Tajin or salt. If you book through us, you are automatically upgraded to Preferred Club status and receive Premium tequila. 2. Bordeaux (Preferred Club only for Breakfast and Lunch)
This elegant French-inspired restaurant offers a fine dining experience with a focus on classic dishes and wine pairings. It recently underwent a full renovation and the result was a stunning ambience and elegant feel for a luxurious escape.
Bordeaux recently became the designated Preferred Club restaurant for breakfast and dinner. While Oceana used to be the Preferred restaurant, the move to Bordeaux was excellent because it offers an airconditioned seating area as well as a casual outdoor space for wet swimsuits.
– Breakfast Highlights: (Preferred Club Only)
The breakfast options are a feast for the senses, featuring made-to-order omelets, fluffy pancakes, fresh fruit, yogurt, and a variety of pastries. For those craving something savory, the Eggs Benedict or chilaquiles (a traditional Mexican breakfast dish) were absolute must-tries. The outdoor seating area, with its cool breeze and pool view, made every morning feel like a special occasion. We tried the chicken & waffles, fruit plate and potatoes with chorizo. The green juice with cactus, parsley and spinach stole the show!
– Lunch Highlights: (Preferred Club Only)
Lunch at the Preferred Club Restaurant was equally impressive. The menu included fresh ceviche, grilled fish tacos, juicy burgers, and a selection of salads. The standout dish for us was the shrimp aguachile—a zesty and refreshing Mexican ceviche-style dish and the seafood soup (delish!) The attentive service and serene ambiance made this our go-to spot for daytime dining. The staff was always inviting, friendly and attentive.
– Dinnertime Standout Dishes:
The escargot à la bourguignon was a decadent starter, while the duck à l’orange (made with Grand Marnier) was a showstopper. For dessert, the crème brûlée was creamy and perfectly caramelized.
– Ambiance:
The romantic setting, complete with soft lighting and white tablecloths, made this a perfect spot for a date night. Dinner at Bordeaux requires adherence to the dress code.
4. Windows (Dinner)
Windows was a nice option for dinner with views of the ocean and greenery (and air-conditioning). The menu of dishes, from classic appetizers like beef carpaccio and hummus with pita bread, to satisfying main courses like beef filet and the popular Catch of the Day. We were particularly impressed with the Mediterranean salmon, which was cooked to perfection and served with a delicious lemon sauce.
The service was great with attentive, knowledgeable staff who made us feel welcome and ensured we had a memorable dining experience.

3. Barefoot Grill (Lunch)
Located by the pool, this casual spot is perfect for a quick bite between swims or sunbathing sessions.
– Standout Dishes:
The burgers were juicy and flavorful, and the fish tacos were a hit with our family. The nachos, loaded with cheese, guacamole, and salsa, were perfect for sharing.
6. Coco Café (24/7)
This charming café is open 7am to 11pm and serves coffee, pastries, and light snacks. Unlike most other Secrets resorts, this Coco Cafe is not open 24 hours. Note: If you’re an early riser, you’ll be hard-pressed to find coffee before 7:00am anywhere but your in-room coffeemaker (or simply request 24-hour room service for coffee and pastries and proceed to seize the day!)
– Standout Offerings:
The cappuccinos were rich and creamy, and the pastries were fresh and delicious. It’s the perfect spot for an early morning pick-me-up or a late-night treat.
7. Gohan Sushi Bar (Dinner)
Tucked away behind the Sky Bar is Secret Aura’s Gohan Sushi Bar restaurant. It is a fantastic culinary treasure with its elegant decor and warm ambiance offering delightful options that caters to many palates and tempts the senses. Gohan also serves vegetarian delights for those seeking plant-based options such as vegetable pad Thai with peanut sauce with a creamy texture and a touch of sweetness.
– Standout Dishes:
The Mahi Mahi Cantonese Style was a delicious with its soy-ginger sauce adding a sweet and savory kick to the tender fish. The Catch of the Day in Yuzu sauce was another winner, showcasing the chef’s skill in highlighting the natural flavors of the fish. The tempura fried ice cream for dessert was a playful and decadent option with a crispy exterior and a creamy chilled center. The Coconut and Mango Rice was a refreshing and light choice, perfect for a tropical escape.
8. Market Café (Breakfast & Lunch)
This buffet-style restaurant offers a wide variety of international dishes.
– Breakfast Highlights:
The made-to-order omelets and fresh fruit were our go-to choices.
– Lunch Highlights:
The ceviche bar and grilled meats were standout options.

Make it a guiltless option by using Splenda as the sweetener or opt for agave syrup (instead of simple syrup). The spicy margarita, recommended by Alfredo, was also a hit—perfectly balanced with a kick of heat.
– Ambiance:
The lounge itself is newly remodeled and elegantly designed, with comfortable seating, air conditioning, a pool table, light snacks round the clock, and a serene vibe. The usual light snacks include burgers, delicious buffalo wings, quesadillas, fruits, pastries and more. It’s a great place to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail or a nightcap after a day in the sun, or a great spot to catch “the game” while on holiday.

The laid-back vibe here is perfect for enjoying a drink while soaking up the sun on your pool chair or Preferred Club beach lounger. The Mexican Michelada was a refreshing choice for poolside sipping—a savory blend of beer, lime juice, and spices. For something sweeter, the piña colada and strawberry daiquiri were tropical delights.

One of the most fun and unique features of the resort, the Manatees Swim-Up Bar is located in the main pool right by the action.
– Drink Highlights:
Frozen cocktails are the star here. The mango tango (a blend of mango and tropical flavors) and the blue lagoon (a vibrant blue cocktail with rum and citrus) were our favorites. Or opt for a Kiwi Smash with Citron vodka and kiwi puree, or their trademark Island Cozumel made with tequila, orange & lime juice with tamarind and Tajin!
– Ambiance:
There’s something inherently fun about ordering a drink without ever leaving the pool. The lively atmosphere and friendly bartenders make this a must-visit spot for anyone looking to add a little extra fun to their day.
4. Rendezvous Lobby Bar
The Rendezvous Lobby Bar is the resort’s main evening bar and a hub of nighttime activity.
– Drink Highlights:
The Oaxacan Old Fashioned, made with tequila and mezcal instead of whiskey, was a sophisticated twist on a classic. For something lighter, the mojito was refreshing and perfectly balanced.
– Ambiance:
With live music, a dance floor, and a lively crowd, this bar is the perfect place to start or end your evening. The bartenders here are incredibly skilled and happy to customize drinks to your preferences.
5. Sky Bar
For those who want to keep the party going late into the night, the Sky Bar is the place to be.
– Drink Highlights:
The club offers a full bar with a focus on cocktails that pack a punch. The espresso martini was a hit for those needing a little extra energy to dance the night away.
– Ambiance:

The Spa: Pure Relaxation
The Secrets Spa by Pevonia is a sanctuary of relaxation. We indulged in a couples’ massage, which was heavenly. The spa also offers facials, body treatments, and a hydrotherapy circuit. Thanks to our 25% spa discount through Life Goal Travel, we felt pampered without breaking the bank. The newly renovated spa is actually located next door at Sunscape Resort, but it’s an easy 2 minute walk.
The Pools and Beaches: Paradise Found
The resort features multiple pools, including a Preferred Club pool with cushioned loungers and a swim-up bar. The main pool was lively, with music and activities like water volleyball.
The beach is the crown jewel of Secrets Aura Cozumel. The turquoise waters and soft sand were perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, or simply relaxing. The Preferred Club beach area offered extra privacy and comfort. The beach at Secrets Aura faces mainland Mexico meaning that sargassum is less of an issue year-round on this side of the island versus some of the Riviera Maya beaches which face the Caribbean Sea. If traveling to a Riviera Maya beach during the summer, Secrets Aura is definitely an option so ensure your comfort in the water.
Activities: Fun On and Off the Resort
The resort offers a variety of activities, from yoga and dance classes to nightly entertainment. We also ventured off-site for a snorkeling tour with Tiger Cozumel, which was a highlight of our trip.
The Staff: Exceptional Service
The staff at Secrets Aura Cozumel went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. Special shoutouts to Miguel, our pool and beach waiter, and Norma, who kept our rooms spotless.
A Few Tips for Future Guests
1. Book Early: Reserve your preferred room category and dining options as soon as you arrive.
2. Bring Water Shoes: The beach can be rocky in some areas.

And finally, set your expectations appropriately: While Secrets Aura offers an immense array of dining options, friendly service and crystal-clear waters for swimming and snorkeling, it is generally regarded by guests as less luxurious than Secrets Akumal, Maroma and Moxche. Although extensive renovations have taken place throughout the resort, not every nook and cranny, nor every room has been entirely remodeled.
You may notice this more if you book a non-Preferred Room. For the ultimate way to experience Secrets Aura Cozumel, the Preferred Club Beach Front and Ocean Front rooms appear to have been given the highest priority in renovations and do offer some of the best accommodations in the entire island of Cozumel. There are no five-star resorts in Cozumel, and as such, you should expect some “island mentality”. The vibe is chill, relaxed and enjoyable, and…affordable, especially when traveling with adult family. So if you’re looking for excessively luxurious and lavish amenities, Moxche, Akumal, Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres or Maroma may be more your style. Check out our review for those resorts!
